1 The English historian Ronald Hutton noted that by the dawn of the 21st century, there were four separate definitions of the term “shaman” which appeared to be in use:

• The first of these uses the term to refer to “anybody who contacts a spirit world while in an altered state of consciousness”.

• The second definition limits the term to refer to those who contact a spirit world while in an altered state of consciousness at the behest of others.

• The third definition attempts to distinguish shamans from other magico-religious specialists who are believed to contact spirits, such as mediums, witch doctors, spiritual healers or prophets, by claiming that shamans undertake some particular technique not used by the others.

• The fourth definition identified by Hutton uses “shamanism” to refer to the indigenous religions of Siberia and neighbouring parts of Asia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism

2 The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner

3 One of the best books I’ve ever read is Malidoma Patrice Some’s Of Water and the Spirit, which I urge you to run out and buy now, or borrow from your local library. Malidoma was raised in a shamanic tribal tradition in Burkina Faso, and then forced to become a Catholic at a nearby Jesuit school. His story is both heartbreaking – due to being forced to abandon his culture and language – but the experiences he writes of when he returns to his tribe are among the most magical things you will ever read, specifically about shamanic magical practices.

4 I would highly recommend any of the courses from sacredtrust.org

5 I also highly recommend reading Simon Buxton’s revealing and fascinating account of his work in this tradition in his book The Shamanic Way of the Bee.

6 I once worked at a drama school, and the Animal Study class was similarly hilarious to watch – and just as seriously taken part in.

7 Dr Steven Farmer has a great article about the healing properties of drumming and the theta wave experience in journeying here: shamanicpractice.org/article/rhythm-drumming-and-shamanism

8 Although much later I had him privately tested for food intolerances and he had wheat and cow’s milk intolerances among others, so my intuition was right on that one.
